Carlin’s Enaam Ahmed claimed the 2017 BRDC British F3 title with his 12th victory of the season at Snetterton this afternoon. The 17-year-old racer led from lights to flag for the second time this weekend, clinching the championship honours with a full race weekend still remaining. Team mate James Pull, who was the only driver mathematically capable of stopping Ahmed’s championship win, claimed 7th, after damage in race two earlier today compromised his afternoon. Cameron Das crossed the line ninth and also claimed the Sunoco Award for fastest lap of the weekend.
Ahmed started the final race of the weekend from the best possible position, leading the field away from pole. With grid positions set by fastest laps in the races, Das lost out on pole after being handed a five place grid penalty following race two contact with team mate Pull and started sixth. For Pull, his slim chances of preventing Ahmed from clinching the title were compromised by suspension damage following contact in race two, meaning the 17-year-old could only manage a 11th grid slot for the final race of the weekend.
Determined to clinch the championship this afternoon, Ahmed made the perfect getaway to lead the field away, with Toby Sowery following closely in second. Pull made a strong start, immeadiately moving up from 11th to seventh, while Das lost out slightly and dropped to ninth.
Over the first few laps, Ahmed had Sowery close behind in the battle for the lead, but by lap four the Carlin man had extended his lead to almost 0.8s to ease the pressure slightly. Sowery fought back to close the gap once again, but Ahmed drove the perfect race to keep Sowery behind and claim his 12thvictory of the season.
Behind the leader and second in the championship standings, Pull crossed the line seventh, meaning Ahmed was able to clinch the 2017 title this afternoon. Das meanwhile was ninth, despite his front running pace which claimed him the Sunoco Award for fastest lap of the weekend, set in race two.
Speaking about his championship win, Ahmed said, “It’s been very emotional, we’ve been working towards this for a long time and a lot of people have supported me. A big thank you to Carlin, Mark my engineer and my mechanics. Thanks to Trevor for seeing my potential and signing me this year and giving me a great car to drive. Thanks also to my parents and my driver coach Roberto Streit who comes all the way from Brazil to help me get better every weekend. I’m a bit lost for words really, it’s such a great feeling.”
Trevor Carlin added, “We’re chuffed to bits. It’s nice to do it a race early, going into the last race fighting for a championship is a bit stressful! But Enaam has been perfect this year, apart from a small blip at Rockingham, he’s done everything we’ve asked of him. A great job by the team as well, who have provided him with a completely reliable car. We’re delighted.”
The BRDC British F3 drivers will contest one further event in the 2017 championship at Donington Park circuit from 23 – 24 September.
